Zahel - (Archived)

Also one of the founders of “Wien Wein”, Richard Zahel hit the Vienna wine circuit at high speed. Just a few years after retiring from racecar driving, in 2000 Richard was named “Viennese Winemaker of the Year”. Working as close to nature as possible in the vineyard, Richard practices sustainable viticulture. In the cellar, however, his love for speed and technology reigns. To guarantee the best and most careful way of handling grapes, a new production operation was built and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Although Richard Zahel feels bound to the tradition of his old family winery, he is continuously innovative.

The family holdings, all originally in the Mauer district on the south side of Vienna, have been expanded by Richard to include 12 acres in Nussberg, Grinzing and Sievering on the north side. Since 2003, Richard has also concentrated on reintroducing Gemischter Satz.

“For me, harmony is extremely important,” says Richard Zahel. “Our wines live from the constant dialogue between the modern and the traditional, between motion and stillness.”

From vineyards planted in the Schönbrunn Palace gardens, owned by Zahel.
