Philippe Gavignet

"There are a number of Gavignets in Nuits-Saint-Georges. This is the best." -Clive Coates, Cote D'Or.

Philippe Gavignet is the fourth generation to run the family domaine, but the first to devote himself to the vineyard and cellar full-time. He began working with his father Michel in 1979 and took over completely in 1992. Quietly tucked away in the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of the Cote d’Or, the domaine has grown to ten hectares.  The vineyards have been farmed lutte raisonnée for 15 years and no herbicides have been used in the past 6 years. Soils are plowed in function of the vintage conditions (generally 5-6 times per year). Treatments are limited as much as possible in function of vineyard disease pressure.

For vinification, the grapes are de-stemmed entirely and indigenous yeasts take care of fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wines are aged for fifteen months in barrels, about 30% new oak. The wines chez Gavignet clearly convey the incredible diversity among the different Nuits-Saint-Georges terroirs, with precision and focus.
