This estate is located in what is referred to as Lombardy’s “Sanctuary of Sparkling wines”, where as far back as 1570 a wine with bubbles was made. The wines of Franciacorta are primarily made from the Chardonnay grape, along with Pinot Noir and Pinot Bianco. Legend has it that the use of Chardonnay to make the sparkling wine of Franciacorta came about by accident. Apparently, plants labeled ‘Pinot Bianco’, in the nursery were actually Chardonnay. Ferghettina’s vineyards are located at the foot of the Alps, overlooking Lake Sebino. The soil, unlike that of the chalky soil of the Marne Valley in France is made up of pebbles, silt, and sand. It is perfectly drained soil that is ideal for grape vines. Because of the climate and soil composition, the sparkling wines of Franciacorta tend to be fatter than those from the Champagne region. However, the sparkling wines of Ferghettina manage to capture the elegance and finesse that are so special to the sparkling wines of Champagne.
