Furst - (Archived)

The Fürst family has been involved in viticulture since 1638, but it was Paul Furst, the current owner, who built this winery in 1979. Under Paul’s tenure the estate has grown from 6 to 37 acres. The primary holding is 27 acres of the Bürgstadter Centgrafenberg, a south-facing, moderate-to-steep plot of colored sandstone that produces outrageously rich Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Riesling, and Weissburgunder, among others. Paul’s pride and joy are his Pinots, which represent half the production at the estate. Replete with black cherry layers and new French oak, they are the benchmarks for the region. The winery is transitioning to 100% organic viticulture, with about half the vineyards bio at this point (not certified).

The word on 2008:  Yields were miniscule in 2008 due to hail, (20hl/ha in some areas!) so concentration of the wines is quite high.
