Although Hans Peter Goebel grew up working amongst his father’s vines in Stammersdorf, part of Vienna’s 21st District, Hans Peter first set his heart on architecture. He wrote his thesis on designing a modern wine estate in Vienna. The death of his father forced him to put theory into practice as he took over the family business. He remodeled his Heuriger (a traditional Viennese Inn that sells the family’s wines and food) in the mid-nineties; the wines draw his focus now. Although he continues to nurture his architectural interests with occasional furniture designs, it is still the results from the vineyard that are most astonishing.
Atypical for this part of Vienna, Hans Peter has found most of his success with his red varieties. St. Laurent and Blauburger are significant as his real claim to fame “Best Red wine release 2008” for his Cuvée Berg, a blend of Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a very limited, complicated wine with immense aging potential.
