Bois de Boursan - (Archived)

Jean-Paul Versino of Domaine Bois de Boursan is one of just a handful of growers in Chateauneuf du Pape who follow solely traditional methods in the cellar. His stunning wines are noteworthy for their classic Chateauneuf aromas of dark fruits, earth, spice and lavender. Named for the lieu-dit in which they are located, Bois de Boursan consists of 27 parcels of old vines spread over 18 hectares throughout the appellation. The mixture of soil types, exposures, and grape varieties, makes harvesting difficult but adds to the overall complexity of Bois de Boursan’s gorgeous Chateauneufs. Further, the diversity of terroirs and locations allows Jean-Paul to select only the best fruit in any given year and avoid climactic difficulties. Most of his vineyards are located at about 100 meters in altitude and all his vines are bush trained and worked organically. Always the traditionalist, Versino uses native yeasts, whole cluster fermentation with the stems, and an ancient basket press for a light extraction. The wines are aged for nearly two years in large oak barrels before being bottled without fining or filtration.  The resulting wines are unique in their mixture of power and elegance. These are wines that build over time and the best vintages will age for up to 25 years. These are not mass produced, modern, sweet wines. These are wines with tremendous texture and verve.
