Although it may seem strange that a viable wine growing region huddles above Austria's major city, wines made in this area are increasingly significant. Vienna has its own appelation and has vineyards covering 700 hectares with 320 vintners. There is a long history of wine production in Vienna although quality has greatly improved in recent years. The new generation of winemakers are experimenting with varietals and techniques but also getting in touch with the traditions of this area. Most notably with their "Gemischter Satz" wines, traditional field blends of anywhere from three to dozens of white varietals. As explained by importer Paul Darcy “The resulting wines are a melting pot of character, not unlike Vienna itself."
