Karthäuserhof

Christoph and Graciela Tyrell, owners of Weingut Karthäuserhof, reside in the top echelons of Mosel wine producers. This estate has been in existence for centuries, and was previously owned by Carthusian monks, following its presentation to them by Prince Balduin of Luxembourg in the 14th century. Since taking control of this historic estate in the 1980s, the Tyrells have brought together the Kronenberg, Orthsberg, Sang and Stirn vineyards into one site, now referred to simply as Karthäuserhofberg. The Karthäuserhofberg vineyard is situated in Eitelsbach, a small village on the Ruwer, near the town of Trier. The vineyard, comprising 19ha of predominantly Devon slate, is one of the most highly regarded in Germany, and is owned solely by the Tyrells. The vast majority is planted with Riesling, with a small amount of Weissburgunder.

Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Auslese 2005

6/1.5L

Tasting Notes: The 2005 Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Riesling Auslese smells and tastes of melon, white currant preserves, and honey. Rich and imposing on the palate, dominated by sweet berry preserves and caramelized pit fruits but not without a measure of fresh fruit juiciness, this just misses the clarity of the best wines, and turns in a bitter-sweet direction in the finish, suggesting melon rind and pungent herbs. But I suspect it simply needs to get its act together and will taste more harmonious in time. Picking took place here throughout October and into early November, with some genuine Kabinett-typical must weights (a rarity for 2005) in the initial stages and an astonishing, virtually unprecedented array of nobly sweet wines selected on and off throughout the harvest.
