Casa Maschito was founded in 1467 and is located in the town of Maschito, in the province of Potenza, which is in the region of Basilicata. This small town of 2000 inhabitants covers a hill named Mustafa, about 594 meters above sea level, and is part of the island of Vulture. All of the wines of Casa Maschito are made from 100% Aglianico from very old vines. Although the law requires only one year of aging before bottling, Casa Maschito is one of only a few wineries in the region that store their wines 3- 4 years before bottling. Their basic Aglianico is vinified in stainless steel, and spends 3 months in 700 L oak barrels. The vecchio Aglianico is vinified the same way, but spends 8-12 months in large oak barrels. They also produce a miniscule amount of Riserva (3000 btls), which is aged 5 years before being bottled.

In his September 2008 Aglianico tasting, Eric Asimov and his panel found the Casa Maschito very notable. Giving the wine two and a half stars, he describes it as "funky and lively, with smoky dark fruit and mineral flavors." This wine is rich with fine tannins while not being completely over the top. Bottaia pairs nicely with meat dishes such as ribs or wild boar, also pleasing with pasta dishes.
