The Lioco wines are a result of the collaboration between Matt Licklider (import specialist) and Kevin O’Connor (wine director of Spago). Their main goal is to create quality California wines that display the unique terroir of California. They focus mainly on varietals Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, since they both show sensitive site susceptibility to showcase the varietal’s interaction with its terroir. Inspired by traditional European winegrowing practices, they seek out vineyard sites with tougher soil, older vines, and some stress-producing aspect (altitude, extreme temperatures, poor soil, etc). The winemaking favors non interventionist techniques without oak aging; they use wild yeasts and bottle without fining or filtration. Lioco wines are intellectual and restrained examples of a unique Californian style.
