Alberello Rosso di Montalcino

100% Sangiovese Grosso. 2015 was the first vintage in which Fonterenza singled out this parcel from its original Rosso di Montalcino bottling. Since having grafted new Sangiovese vines in this particular plot in 2005 and trained them in an alberello style on wires, the Padovani sisters have felt that it is a unique expression of Sangiovese. Like the other Rosso plots, it is farmed organically and harvested by hand, with much lower yields and greater concentration due to the alberello training. The fruit is destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in steel tank with a 15-20-day maceration. The Alberello gets less barrel age than the regular Rosso: the aging is a total of 20 months, with most of that in steel tank followed by a few months in Slavonian oak botti. Bottled without filtration in September 2017.

"The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino Alberello comes from vines planted in 2005, growing along wires in an Alberello training style, which produces much lower yields. It shows a gorgeous bouquet of crushed cherry with sweet florals and hints of subtle spice, as earthy minerals, leather tones and a hint of undergrowth evolve in the glass. On the palate, I’m finding a refined expression, brimming over with vibrant acids, as pretty cherry-berry tones laced with minerals and spice settle in. It finishes grippy, with a tug of residual acids and lingering tart red berry fruits. This is a gorgeous wine that could easily be mistaken for a Brunello, and a terrific sneak peek at the 2016 vintage."
