Barolo Cerretta

2017
Italy
Piedmont

Compared to the cru of Baudana, Cerretta is much better known, as it is a fairly large cru (by Serralunga standards) with many producers.  The Vairas farm 0.77ha, facing SW, in the subsection of Cerretta known as Cerretta Piani.  This is the coolest microclimate in the cru, with gentle slopes.   The soil is the classic Formazione di Lequio, a thin layer of poor, white topsoil. But, unique to Cerretta Piani, this sits over a substrate of more evolved, iron-rich reddish marls.

Vines for the Barolo Cerretta were planted in 1970.  Fermentation, which for Cerretta often starts quite slowly, is in open-top wood vats, lasting around 20-30 days with manual punchdowns. Depending on the vintage, up to 5% whole clusters could be used, fairly rare for Nebbiolo. After fermentation, macerations continue cappello sommerso for an additional 20-35 days. Aging is for around 32 months in neutral Slavonian oak botti, followed by at least 8 months of bottle aging. Unfined/unfiltered. 3,000 bottles made.

"This is really perfumed and enticing, offering intense floral and citrus character with some cherry. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and very reserved, with a long, racy finish. Fantastic depth of fruit here. Outstanding purity, too. Better in 2025."

"A dark, somber wine, the 2017 Barolo Cerretta shows the more potent, brooding side of Serralunga. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, cured meats, cloves and menthol add to an impression of virile intensity and pure power. Readers will have to be patient here, but there is certainly a ton to look forward to. This is another impressive showing from Baudana and the Vajra family."

"Forest floor, prune, leather and pipe tobacco aromas make their way to the forefront. Showing the heat of the vintage, it's full-bodied and concentrated, offering cherry marinated in spirits, licorice and the warmth of evident alcohol. Tightly knit, enveloping tannins provide firm, velvety support. Drink 2025–2032."

"A release of 3,000 bottles, the Luigi Baudana 2017 Barolo Cerretta is the most downplayed of these three wines and the least complicated from an aromatic point of view. A first wave of aromas is focused on wild rose and crushed flowers. More robust tones of ripe cherry, rusty earth and dark spice follow in time. This edition of Cerretta is surprisingly delicate and fine, going against almost everything we know about robust fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and the powerful 2017 vintage. The wine is counterintuitive in a way only Nebbiolo can be."

"Serralunga d'Alba. Youthful ruby. Minerally, smoky/earthy cherry nose with a hint of exotic spice and black tea leaves. Lots of concentration but at the moment more subdued than their 2017 Baudana. Gorgeous, supple fruit and rich, truly powerful tannins that are still a little demanding right now. Concentrated, austere and still closed, but with lots of potential. (WS)"
