Barolo Monvigliero

2018
Italy
Piedmont

Monvigliero is arguably the most important cru of Verduno and Fratelli Alessandria has some of the biggest holdings there, 1.4ha.  Exposures are South to Southwest, 250-310m.   High average vine age of 45 years. Made similarly to the Barolo San Lorenzo.  Monvigliero exalts the beguiling florality and spice that are Verduno’s calling card.  First produced in 1978. 6,500 bottles made.

"The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more."

"The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is broad, ample and so expressive, all while showing the finesse and classicism that are such a signature of this wine. All elements are so well balanced in a Barolo that speaks to harmony above all else. Sweet red cherry, cedar, orange peel, tobacco and cinnamon give the 2018 tons of aromatic presence. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It's a gorgeous wine in every way."

"This elegant and spicy Barolo offers flavors of soft strawberry and cherry laced with notes of fennel bulb, sweet basil and white pepper. The tannins feel cool and polished, contributing to the overall impression of finesse and the immediate appeal of this wine."

"This Monvigliero doesn't lack personality or complexity. Here in the northern side of the appellation, Fratelli Alessandria was able to bring the tannins to the full ripeness in 2018. A dense palate features violet flavour and zesty acidity. There's a depth of liquorice, smoky woodland notes, fresh cherry fruit and peony. It's a crunchy, elegant wine which becomes leaner on the finish - a very good style for 2018."
