Barolo Riserva Broglio

2012
Italy
Piedmont

In select vintages, Schiavenza will make a Barolo Riserva from either Prapò or Broglio. Broglio is Schiavenza's largest cru holding.  They have 1.5 hectares there.  Exposure (like all of Schiavenza's crus) is Southeast.  360-380m above sea level.
There is a bit more clay in the topsoil here, so there is more vigor and production.  It's the site in which Schiavenza has to do the most work in order to get the balance right to convey the message of Serralunga.  Aging for the Broglio Riserva is a whopping 5 years in wood-- the first 3 years in 3000/3600L Slavonian oak botti and the last 2 years in a 1000L Slavonian oak cask. Released in October 2018. Only 1,333 bottles made.

"Enticing aromas of leather, tar, sandalwood and cherry compote highlight this red, which is just hitting its stride. The flavors mesh nicely with the dense structure. Bright acidity focuses the lingering, iron-tinged aftertaste. Drink now through 2035. 110 cases made, 41 cases imported."
