Blaufränkisch Eisenberg Ried Ratschen

A very special single vineyard of 50-year-old vines with a sandy clay top soil and sand and gravel in the subsoil. Aged for 24 months in 2,000L barrels. Ratschen has darker fruit than the Weinberg and is quite structured with very fine tannins. It has deft balance - a football player who practices ballet for strength.

"Velvety, showing kirsch flavors that mingle with notes of lavender, kumquat and rooibos tea, this is juicy, with beautiful acidity providing energy and lift midpalate. The tannins are slightly chewy at the moment, so better to wait for full integration despite the open-textured profile."

"This seamlessly marries firm structure and fresh acidity, which is typical for the grape. Shows the kind of seductive richness you'd expect from a Premier Cru red Burgundy. The warm tannins are perfectly integrated with the bright minerality at the long finish. Has the structure and balance to age, but delicious right now."

"From a vineyard planted a half-century ago on sandy clay, this is superripe, the dimpled black fruit giving way to a hint of volatility. This feels Italianate in its sweet-sour balance and its spice, and would make a fine pairing with sauerbraten, or any braise that incorporates fruit."
