Brunello di Montalcino
100% Sangiovese Grosso. Very traditional vinification: natural-yeast fermentation with a month-long maceration in Slavonian oak casks, followed by four years of aging in botti ranging from 2000-3500 liters in size.
When the Padovani sisters began in 1997, with their vineyard property fully within DOCG Brunello di Montalcino bounds, the appellation had been closed to any further production of DOCG wine. But they managed to get an exception and were granted the right to bottle Brunello from 1 of their 5 hectares. Similarly, in theory all of their property should be permitted for Rosso di Montalcino, but Fonterenza was limited to 1.5 hectares' worth of bottled Rosso.
