Champagne Brut Solessence 7 Villages Extra Brut

This wine has an unusually fine mousse and terrific elegance, fruit and stony salinity. This is Sélèque’s flagship wine, representing nearly half of the total house production; it also roughly mirrors the house plantations, originating in all seven communes where Jean-Marc grows vines. A blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir, sourced from the domaine’s younger vines, which average 40 years of age (that, it must be said, would constitute the old vine selection for most Champagne properties!) Half the blend is reserve wine, which is a perpetual reserve aged in barrel.  The base wine is made predominately in steel; aged on its lees for 20 months. 2016 base vintage.

"The current release of Jean-Marc Sélèque’s “Solessence” non-vintage Brut is from the base year of 2013 and is comprised of a blend of fifty percent chardonnay, forty percent pinot meunier and ten percent pinot noir. This is the same wine that I reviewed in October of last year, but from an earlier disgorgement, and it includes fifty percent reserve wines and was finished off with a dosage of seven grams per liter. Jean-Marc has begun to age all of his wines on cork, rather than crown cap, which is only adding to the textural complexity of this superb wines. The Solessence Brut NV delivers lovely aromatic complexity in its blend of apple, pear, meunier floral tones, brioche, chalky minerality, almond and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and complex, with a fine core, pinpoint bubbles, fine focus and grip and a long, well-balanced and still youthful finish. This is a beautiful bottle of bubbly, with the nose really starting to show some secondary layers, now that it is nearly two years out from its disgorgement, but with the palate still zesty and loaded with the verve of youth. Jean-Marc Sélèque is one of the brightest young stars in Champagne! Fine, fine non-vintage Brut. 2017- 2035."

"The NV Extra Brut Solessence 7 Villages is bright, focused and full of energy, not to mention a terrific introduction to these Champagnes and Jean-Marc Sélèque's style. The low dosage of 3 grams per liter gives the Solessence real energy and briskness throughout. Bright Chardonnay top notes meld together with the textural richness of the Pinots in a wonderfully complete, expressive Champagne. Hints of dried flowers, sage, mint, red plum and citrus peel add the closing shades of nuance. Disgorged: January, 2019."

"Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in November 2020 with two grams per liter dosage, Sélèque's latest NV Extra Brut Solessence is showing very well, bursting with aromas of white flowers, pear, crisp stone fruits and almond paste. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's lively and saline, with a pillowy mousse and chalky grip on the finish."
