Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Colombis”

France
Rhône
2020

“Colombis” has become an iconic wine of Ferrando’s. It’s quite unique in her portfolio as it’s the only Châteauneuf that does not comes from the Les Serres vineyard. It’s 100% Grenache that comes from four parcels on the plateau of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with northfacing vineyards: Rayas and Colombis with sandstone and sandy soil, les Roues with a predominately clay soil mixed with granitic galets stones, and le Cristia with a sandy limestone soil. The vines average 80 years-old. Whole-cluster fermented in tronconical wood tanks and aged in neutral demi-muids and amphora for 18 months.

"The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis just about jumps out of the glass with its kirsch, ripe strawberry, wildflower, Provençal spice, and loamy earth-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless, incredibly elegant mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, and one great finish. It doesn’t have the sheer mid-palate depth of the 2007 or 2016 (but few wines do) and is already accessible and undeniably delicious. This brilliant Grenache will drink well for 15 years or more."

"Interesting and unusual aromatic display, with liquorice, dark chocolate, woody herbs, raspberry and a touch of spice. Generous and flowing on the palate, the acid is piercing, precise and there’s plenty of textural interest. Promises to be complex and fascinating in time, and the wait shouldn’t be too long. Largely sandy soils, a small lieu-dit to the west of the village. All fermented and aged in tronconic vats."

"Strong crimson, purple reflections, broad ochre lightening on the rim. Delicate herbal savouriness, red cherries, fine wild berries, candied violets in the background. Juicy, Grenach full of finesse, delicate fruit expression, pleasant, lively structure with velvety, ripe tannins. Seems light footed, mineral and long lasting; great ageing potential, very elegant wine."

"The single varietal Grenache 20'20 Chatearuneuf-du-Pape Colombis is a towering effort. Having the edge over the '20'21 and coming in at 15.5% alcohol, it presents pristine aromas of ripe red fruits that have a jewel-like quality to them, dried lavender, cardamom, licorice, pencil shavings and crushed rocks. Full-bodied and layered, it is framed by ever-sovelvety tannins and balanced by high levels of fresh acidity. There is fantastic tension on the complex finish that goes on for well over a minute. 6,000 bottles produced. "

"Very fragrant, with sweet-plum and cocoa-powder notes, but not a hint of overripeness, this is a spectacular Chateauneuf! Very rich and sensual, this rolls over your palate and before you know it you’re lost in its warm embrace. The fine tannins at the expansive, spicy finish are spot-on. A single-vineyard wine that’s 100% grenache. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"This is a lovely display of fruit, with cassis, bitter cherry and mulberry notes that stretch out effortlessly, carried by a perfectly embedded structure and backed by lilting anise and red and black tea notes along the way. Reveals a seductive mouthfeel too, but don’t let that fool you—this will age well. Drink now through 2036. 869 cases made, 190 cases imported."

"Drawn from three plots of old-vine Grenache (70- to 80-year-old vines), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis looks to be another fantastic example of this cuvée, bursting with cherries and raspberries and nuanced by delicate sprigs of garrigue and hints of roses and black tea. Medium to full-bodied and silken in texture on the palate, it finishes with tremendous length and subtly building tannins. It’s one 2020 that could take a few years to come around."
