Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Julien Barrot"

2016

Formerly their "Signature" bottling.

From a mix of different terroir found in Châteauneuf; yellow and red sand, red clay, large pebbles, with a high proportion of sand. The average age of the vines is more than 70 years old. The final blend is: • 62% Grenache from a plot at the junction of "Palestor" and "Bois Dauphin" districts and one at the junction of "Grand Pierre", "Rayas" and "Pointu" districts as well as "Cabrières", "Boursan" and "Pied Long" blocks • 18% Mourvèdre from "Les Mascaronnes" and "Boursan" plots• 13% Syrah from "Le Parc" and "Cabrières" plots• 5% Cinsault from "Pierre à feu" plots• 1% Vacarrese• 1% Other Rigorous bud pruning, as well as green harvesting and leaf thinning, keep yields low. The picking is entirely by hand, with sorting in the vineyard and again in the cellar. Underripe stalks are removed. The wine stays on the skins for over 4 weeks; the Grenache is aged in old oak casks, the Mourvèdre and the Syrah are aged on their lees in 600L barrels used to age 1 to 3 previous vintages, and the Cinsault is aged in stainless steel tanks. Aging lasts approximately 18 months before the wine is bottled without filtration.  “This cuvée is the one which captures the most the essence of the estate and my winegrower philosophy. My approach to wine has taken me on a quest to reveal the best of the terroir. We have made this wine with the greatest of care, taking into account the effects of both the earth and sky on the grapes and wine. While in the vineyard, we use only organic fertilizers, harvest the fruit by hand, and meticulously select our grapes. Once in the cellar, we practice gentle extraction and long, careful ageing.” —Julien Barrot

"Vivid ruby. Sexy, expansive aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, smoky minerals and candied flowers pick up a spicy topnote with air. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and boysenberry flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and floral-driven thrust on the impressively long finish, which is framed by supple, harmonious tannins."

"A terrific entry-level offering, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Signature is a blend of 62% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah, 6% Cinsault and 2% other varieties. It's full-bodied and intense but silky and almost weightless, delivering wonderful, complex notes of cherries, raspberries and an array of dried spices and herbs. With 2,500 cases produced, it should be fairly widely available and reasonably priced."
