100% Cabernet Franc. 2017 is the first vintage of this new Chinon bottling. It is a combination of estate fruit and purchased fruit, a first for Raffault and a response to the devastating vintage conditions. The grapes come from flat, sandy, gravelly sites along the Vienne and Loire rivers, including Raffault's Barnabés vineyard. As with all Raffault wines, the fruit is farmed organically, harvested by hand and destemmed but not crushed. The whole berries are fermented with native yeasts in tank with a maceration of about two weeks. Like the Barnabés, this Chinon is aged only in stainless steel tanks for about 6 months before bottling.

"This straight Chinon from Domaine Raffault made its debut in the 2017 vintage, in response to the very short, frost-damaged crop, the estate started producing this bottling, which is made from a combination of estate-grown and purchased fruit. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts (like all of the Raffault wines) and aged entirely in tank prior to bottling. The 2018 version comes in at a svelte 12.5 percent octane and delivers a lovely and wide open bouquet of black cherries, cassis, cigar wrapper, gravelly soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and complex, with a fine core of fruit, excellent soil signature, modest tannins and a long, beautifully balanced and already delicious finish. This cuvée is designed to drink well early and the 2018 achieves its goal superbly well, but this also has the depth and structural chassis to also age very well indeed. A fine new addition to the Raffault lineup and a great, great wine for restaurant wine lists! "
