Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva

2016
Italy
Calabria

The Riserva is 100% Gaglioppo from the vineyard Muzzunetto, the oldest vines of the estate, planted in 1968, facing north. The grapes were harvested in the first week of October at 50hl/ha.  Fermentation was spontaneous with an extended maceration of one month, after which the free-run juice is drained (not pressed). Aged one year in a 2000L Slavonian oak botte.  It undergoes a wide filtration and is then bottled-aged until four years after the harvest.  3,000 bottles made.

"The 2016 Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva opens slowly in the glass, youthfully inward and darkly intense. Coaxing brings forward black currant, ashen stone and sweet smoke nuances. This washes across the palate, surprisingly juicy and fresh. Mentholated herbs complement crisp black cherry and sour citrus. Sneaky tannins emerge through the finish, crystalline in nature, as a bump of residual acidity maintains unprecedented freshness. Licorice and liquid stone notes linger. The 2016 remains incredibly primary yet concentrated and complex. It will be years before this mellows, yet I certainly hope to be able to revisit a bottle when it does. This is a gorgeous wine in the making."
