Clos de la Perrière

The Clos de la Perrière is a single five hectare 1er cru monopole parcel, a true clos, surrounded by a wall in Fixin. Benigne Joliet considers that there are four separate terroirs here and each is vinified and aged separately and blended just before bottling. The soil varies with stoney limestone, clay, a mix of clay and limestone and then the area near the woods at the top of the slope is cooler than the rest of the vineyard. The youngest vines are ten years old and are not blended into this cuvèe, so the vines are 40-90 years old. In 2015, the wine was made with 100% whole cluster during vinification and aged in oak, 20% new.

"Soft wood sets off very ripe aromas of plum, cassis, earth and a hint of the sauvage. The rich, concentrated and opulent middle weight flavors coat the palate with sap while displaying fine depth and length on the slightly warm finish. There is good minerality which helps to add a bit of lift and overall, this is really quite good and sufficiently structured to argue for extended keeping."
