"Cuvée Louis" Brut Nature (2002-03 Base)

50%Chardonnay/50% Pinot Noir. Created by the Tarlants' parents back in 1982, the prestige cuvée Louis is named for Benoît’s and Melanie’s great-great-great grandfather. Louis was the first to bottle Tarlant estate wine (in 1928) and the one who planted this 0.9 hectare of selection massale Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (in 1946-48). The lieu-dit is named Les Crayons in reference to its particularly chalky make-up. It is a flat site near the Marne in the Tarlant home village of Oeuilly and produces what the Tarlants refer to as a "river wine" of fuller body and richer character. This bottling is a blend of 2002 and 2003. The fruit was hand-harvested and gently pressed; the juice was fermented with natural yeasts in Burgundy barrel; and the wine was aged in barrel with no malolactic fermentation until bottling in 2004. Aged sur lattes until disgorgement in 2018. Zero dosage.

"The NV Brut Nature Cuvée Louis is a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Les Crayons lieu-dit in Oeuilly vinified and aged in oak, 60% 2003 and 40% 2002. It is the richest and most overt Champagne in the Tarlant range. Vinification in oak and long aging on the lees add a whole range of toasty aromas. Rich and vinous, with gorgeous depth, the Cuvée Louis is another winner in this range. Disgorged: March, 2018."

"The current release of Cuvée Louis from the Tarlant family is a blend of 2003 and 2002 and spent fully fourteen years aging sur latte prior to its disgorgement on March of 2018. It is composed of a cépages of fifty percent each of chardonnay and pinot noir, with the vines over seventy years of age and all planted in the lieu à dit of Les Crayons in the village of Oeuilly. The wine offers outstanding complexity on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, white peach, fresh-baked bread, a complex base of soil, a nice touch of walnut and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core of fruit, good acids and grip, elegant mousse and a long, very nicely balanced and classy finish. This has some of the warm vintage structural generosity of 2003, but it is also precise, vibrant and quite classy finish. The Cuvée Louis is often a real long distance runner, but with the 2003 in the blend here, this is going to be at its best over the next decade or so. 2020-2035. 93."

"A pure note of crushed black currant is laced with lovely spice and graphite accents in this mouthwatering Champagne, which is firm and well-integrated, with hints of toast and mineral rounding out the clean-cut finish. Disgorged March 2018. Drink now through 2025. 100 cases imported. "
