Grüner Veltliner Ried Kremser Wachtberg

2016
Wachtberg is among the best and most famous vineyard sites in Krems. The vineyard lies right behind the historical section of the city, above Pfarrplatz.  The soil is a combination of loess and granite. 60-70 year-old vines. Harvest took place on October 9th. No added yeast. Fermented and raised in stainless steel on the fine lees. 13% ABV with bright acidity and 2 g/L RS.

"...Opulent and sweetly ripe, its dominant, succulent peach and mirabelle prove remarkably transparent to stony, smoky, crystalline nuances, and acquire welcome counterpoint as well as glowing persistence from an alliance of walnut and fruit pit. For a wine so rich and enveloping, this offers an uncanny sense of vibratory finishing energy. The exposure to cooling forest breezes on this terraced, in places 1,200-foot-elevation “Lookout Mountain” above Krems is often cited as a source of phenolic intensity and animation, a combination that’s certainly on exhibit here. Given the recent origins of this estate and consequent limited track record, my seemingly generous prognosis of ageability actually reflects intentional caution. "
