IGT Terre Siciliane Rosso "Quota N"

50% Nerello Mascalese/30% Grenache/20% Grecanico-Carricante-Coda di Volpe. Eduardo acquired this beautiful half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence piedi franco on label), mixed-variety, very old alberello vines in the contrada (district) of Nave on the north face of Mt. Etna in 2018. He is in the process of restoring these widely spaced, fragile, 80-100-year-old bushes and farming them organically. The vineyard is surrounded by ancient stone walls and features very rocky, sandy volcanic soils. The name "Quota N" pinpoints the parcel quite literally: the tiny dirt road running by is called the Strada Quota Nave. Eduardo was not permitted to use the full word "Nave" because its 1070-meter altitude exceeds the limits of the DOC.

The bunches are hand-harvested, vinified as a mix of whole clusters and destemmed berries, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 10 months in concrete tank with minimal racking. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.
