Le Verrane DOC Piemonte

100% Barbera. Though the calling card of Bera is their Moscato d'Asti, they also grow Barbera on the calcareous clay soils on the slopes of their certified-organic estate in the Canelli hills of Piedmont. Le Verrane is an old-school style of the region, slightly frizzante from finishing its natural fermentation in bottle. The Barbera is hand-harvested, destemmed and gently crushed; fermentation is purely spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and without sulfur in concrete tank. Maceration lasts about 3 weeks. The wine remains in tank for 18 months and is then bottled with some remaining sugar and a small amount of sulfur. There is usually a small of residual sugar (5-6 grams/liter) in the final wine, but it drinks dry, structured and lively with acidity and a little spritz. Though Le Verrane comes from DOCG Barbera d'Asti vines, like Bera's Ronco Malo bottling, the DOCG doesn't allow for this rare traditionaly style, hence the DOC Barbera del Monferrato designation.
