"Les P'tits Vélos À Pignon Fixe" (2015/2017)
100% Chenin Blanc. P'tits Vélos is Bellivière's first and only sparkling Chenin. The first release was in 2019 and was made solely from 2013 estate with the méthode champenoise and 4 years sur lie. The second release in spring 2021 is a different wine, from what Eric and Christine Nicolas refer to as a sort of solera system. They took barrels of still 2015 and 2017 wines (from biodynamically farmed estate Chenin Blanc from across their 50+ small parcels in Jasnières and the surrounding Coteaux du Loir), blended them in 2019 and bottled it with some 2018 sweet wine to promote secondary fermentation. That wine spent a year sur lie in the bottle before disgorgement in November 2020.
The name P'tits Vélos translates literally to "small bicycles" but is a euphemistic reference to the wheels turning in vigneron Eric Nicolas's mind as he contemplates new ideas of how to go about things. The descriptor of "a pignon fixe" or "fixed-gear" on the back label is an extension of the cycling metaphor, a reference to Bellivière's use of the stricter méthode champenoise (traditionelle) as opposed to the more "freewheeling" (en roue libre) style of pétillant naturel or méthode ancienne winemaking.
