L`Esprit Rosalia Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The L'Esprit line of wines began at Closel in the 2017 vintage, when virtually all of the estate Chenin crop was decimated by spring frost, and will be used for Closel bottlings that diverge in some way from the classic [and expected] estate Savennières. In the case of Rosalia, the divergence is in the form of a red wine--formerly bottled for years as Closel Anjou Rouge but very much under the radar--from 45-year-old Closel estate Cabernet Sauvignon vines on schist.
The biodynamically farmed fruit was harvested by hand and pressed with 70% whole clusters; the fermentation was spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and the maceration semi-carbonic and short (7 days). The wine was bottled 3 months later. The wine takes its name from the rare and beneficial rosalia alpina beetle found in the beech and willow trees on the Closel property.
