Mencía, Monterrei

From vineyards situated in the DO of Monterrei comes this light, fruity and aromatic wine. The fruit comes from twenty-seven-plus-year-old vines growing on granite/slate soils. The grapes are hand-harvested. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel and malolactic fermentation is spontaneous.

90 points
"Lurid violet color. Lively and sharply focused on the perfumed nose, displaying fresh blackcurrant, cherry and licorice qualities and a floral topnote that gains strength as the wine opens up. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering dark berry and bitter cherry flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. A spicy note adds cut to the persistent finish, which features smooth tannins and a late suggestion of dark chocolate."
