Montefalco Rosso Riserva DOC "Serpullo"

2018
Italy
Umbria

60% Sangiovese/20% Sagrantino/20% Montepulciano. From biodynamically farmed, certified-organic, hand-harvested estate fruit. The riserva-level Montefalco Rosso comes from hand-selected bunches from mixed vineyard plantings going back about 65 years. Fermentation is spontaneous in open-topped wooden vats (tini) without temperature control or sulfur and with daily punchdowns. The wine is aged for a minimum of 3 years in old Slavonian oak botti. It is bottled without fining, filtering or the addition of sulfur. Serpullo is named for a beloved Fongoli vineyard veteran.

"A mix of ripe plums and cherries blends with dusty rose and hints of shaved cedar to form a dusty yet dazzling bouquet as the 2018 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Serpullo blossoms in the glass. It’s fleshy and enveloping on the palate, with masses of red and black berry fruits propelled by brisk acids. A pretty inner sweetness pops toward the close. The 2018 finishes lightly structured, yet long and potent, while leaving pretty violet and lavender tones to linger. This is a vintage to enjoy over the near term, as it’s already packed full of pleasure."
