Montepulciano d`Abruzzo "Prologo"

100% Montepulciano. Prologo was De Fermo's first wine, hence the "prologue" moniker, in the 2010 vintage. It comes from 2 of the estate's 4 parcels of certified-biodynamic vines (aged around 25 years). The Prologo fruit is hand-harvested the latest of all of the De Fermo vines/wines (usually in the first 10 days of October, then destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and no temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration last 2-3 weeks, while the fermentation goes on for up to 2 months. The wine is aged in large oak botti for up to a year and half and is bottled without fining or filtering or additional sulfur (minimal amounts are used at racking only).

"The 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Prologo requires a bit of time in the glass to blow off its youthful reduction. Beneath, there are masses of dark mineral, earth tones and hints of animal musk that bombard the senses prior to releasing its notes of ripe cherry fruit. This is silky and enveloping, mixing nervous acids with tart wild berries to create an expression of sweet and sour contrasts. Wet stone, violets, citrus and savory herbs linger long, with a coating of grippy tannin that creates a classically dry sensation. The 2017 reveals its ripe vintage character through its primary intensity. It should provide a lot of pleasure after only a short stay in the cellar."
