Pergaud St. Julien-en-St. Alban Marsanne

2015

100% Marsanne. St. Julien-en-St. Alban is a village and vineyard area at the southernmost edge of the northern Rhône Valley, on the western side of the Rhône River in the Ardèche. Its granite soils, higher altitude and greater overall warmth distinguish it from Texier's other main vineyard site in Brézème, across the Rhône on the east side with limestone soils and slightly cooler temperatures. While it's best known for Texier's Syrah bottlings, it also includes a parcel of 80-year-old vines in a particuarly rocky part of the vineyard. Eric picks the Marsanne slightly underripe to maintain some acid structure. Starting in the 2015 vintage, it is destemmed and put with the skins in clay amphorae for about 8 months, a technique Eric learned from Elisabetta Foradori, as a way of bringing more character to the variety. It is bottled with zero sulfur. The resulting wine is not an "orange" wine--it remains relatively light in color, with a golden hue, and only moderately phenolic, exhibiting a slightly saline, herbal and peachy character. Tiny production. SOLD OUT FOR THE VINTAGE.

Note: the Pergaud domaine moniker appears on four Texier wines and indicates that the wine is made from older, non-clonal vines.

Eric Texier's comments on the wine: "Dense and intense, in part from months of maceration in tinajas, 2015 is a very unique vintage for this wine. There is immense aging potential here. The wine is currently recovering from its bottling and will fully show its power and complexity in the fall. Contrary to what has been spread, the 2015’s actually have very high acidity due to elevated levels of tartaric acid during the harvest.  No addition of SO2 – 1752 bottles and 24 magnums."
