Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses

2018

Many argue that Île des Vergelesses should be classified as a Grand Cru. It's true that in the best years, with it's eastern exposure and mid-slope location, it behaves as a Grand Cru. Chandon de Briailles has a healthy three hectares planted to pinot noir, located in an area with a nice slope, and a good mix of clay and limestone. It's safe to say that Île along with Bressandes are the flagship wines of the domaine. In 2018, 70% of whole clusters were kept and half were removed halfway through the fermentation. Aged mostly in neutral barrels, with 15% new oak. When tasted out of barrel in 2019, it had very pretty fruit, was super elegant, and the structure felt very well integrated with the tannins perfectly in the background.

"This is at once fresher and cooler with its airy nose of intensely floral-suffused aromas of red and dark raspberry. There is even better vibrancy to the detailed and stony middle weight flavors that also possess good depth and persistence on the finish that flashes a similar hint of sweetness."

"The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from mid-slope, east-facing vines on limestone-clay soils. This offers more clarity and delineation than the Les Vergelesses, with vivid red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite saline and a little spicier than the Vergelesses, with a longer tail on the finish. This is superb. What you might call proper red Burgundy!"

"The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses was showing very well, revealing an inviting bouquet of red berries, plums, orange rind, rose petals, peonies and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly enveloping and precise, it's deep and textural while remaining fine-boned, concluding with a long, floral finish. Invariably one of the domaine's most consistent wines, this is very promising."
