Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses

2018
France
Burgundy

Of the four hectares that Chandon de Briailles owns in Île de Vergelesses, one hectare is planted to Chardonnay. It's a clay and limestone soil, which is a part of the same geological break as Charlemagne; with more clay at the bottom of the parcel and very calcareous at the top. The chardonnay, planted in 1985 and 1991, is in a perect location mid-slope facing east. One third is aged in a large, Austrian oak Stockinger barrel and 2/3 is aged in neutral barrels.

"An interesting and cool nose is comprised by notes of grapefruit, lemongrass and a whiff of the exotic that includes white peach. There is again excellent intensity and underlying tension suffusing the even more delineated flavors that exude an almost pungent minerality on the notably dry and youthfully austere finish that proffers markedly better depth."

"The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses Blanc has picked up considerable additional tension since I tasted it from barrel. Exhibiting notes of pear, waxy citrus rind, white flowers and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, energetic and saline."
