Pineaux Mêlés Vieilles Vignes VDF
50% Chenin Blanc/50% Menu Pineau. This "mixed pineaux" wine is a blend of two co-planted Pineau-family grapes: Chenin Blanc (known locally in the Cher as Pineau de la Loire) and Orbois (known locally and more commonly as Menu Pineau). Planted on clay-limestone soils and organically farmed (soon to be certified), the vines are up to around 100 years old--thus the yield and the production are quite small. Valérie harvests them by hand as of the 2016 vintage. The grapes are destemmed and direct-pressed, with the juice cooled down immediately and settled naturally. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and fiberglass vats. The wine usually goes through malolactic fermentation and is aged in vat before being bottled without fining or filtering. Sulfur use is modest during vinification, aging and bottling, finishing at a total of 35 mg/liter.
