Quota N Rosso IGT Terre Siciliane
50% Nerello Mascalese/20% Grenache/30% Grecanico-Carricante-Coda di Volpe. Eduardo acquired this beautiful half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence piedi franco on label), mixed-variety, very old bush vines in the contrada or district of Nave in time to bottle it for the first time in the 2018 vintage. He is in the process of restoring these widely spaced, 80-100-year-old bush vines, treating each of these gems like an individual at a fragile stage of life. The vineyard is surrounded by ancient stone walls and features quite rocky, sandy volcanic soils. The name "Quota N" pinpoints the parcel quite literally: the tiny dirt road running by is called the Strada Quota Nave. Eduardo was not permitted to use the full word "Nave" because its 1070-meter altitude exceeds the limits of the DOC. That elevation makes this parcel the very last of Acosta's to be harvested, generally around the 3rd week of October. The bunches are hand-harvested, partly destemmed, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete and old barriques with minimal racking and bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.2000 bottles produced in 2019 (a balanced, classic Mediterranean vintage).
