Riesling Dry Niersteiner

Bone dry at just 1g/l RS. 100% Niersteiner Pettenthal harvested in the steep parcels of this grand cru vineyard site. Vinified 50% in steel, 50% in barrel with tons of lees and skin contact. A seamless, elegant, dry wine with a glowing heart, grown among massive slabs of red slate in the towering Pettenthal. Johannes frequently cites this cuvee as exemplary of what he is trying to do differently from the previous era. Terroir > fruit, elegance > power, and viticulture > viniculture. This is a sleek, thoughtful interpretation of Riesling as the Germans drink it at home.

"This 100% Pettenthal leads with penetrating fresh lime and tangerine, accompanied by smoky black tea and bracing ocean breeze. Silken in feel and infectiously juicy, it finishes with surprising buoyancy (given nearly 12.5% alcohol) as well as striking transparency to smoky, alkaline and mouthwateringly saline mineral nuances in shimmering interaction with citricity and bittersweet inner-mouth floral perfume. Incidentally, the wine harbors just a single gram of residual sugar."

"The dry 2016 Nierstein Riesling is entirely sourced in the Pettenthal and the vines were cultivated to become a Grosses Gewächs. The wine opens clear, fresh and mineral, with ripe but fine white fruit and lemon aromas intermixed with the spicy mineral aromas of the red soil. On the palate, this is a mouth-filling, fresh and charming Riesling of great purity, finesse and elegance. It has a delicious mineral grip and lingering salinity and is a kind of picture book Pettenthal."
