Riesling GG Hipping

2021
Germany
Rheinhessen

(2g RS/7.5g acid/12.5%) Niersteiner Hipping is Gunderloch’s smallest grand cru, sourced from an extremely steep portion of the vineyard. Spontaneously fermented, barrel-aged, and picked at punishingly low yields. The nose is typical Roter Hang: herbal, stony, savory, sunny, but ups the ante in 2021 with exotic florals like lilacs and jasmine tea. It is intense and really exciting! Firm and straight in the mouth, locked in by its grid of acids, structured like sculpted stone. An archetype of Hipping; you could teach a class with this wine.

"Very youthful with pronounced grapefruit peel (zest and pith) character plus lemon balm. Properly ripe and really silky, yet very cool and tightly focused, this has been built for the long term. Firm core of fine tannins and a ton of wet stone minerality. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Screw cap. "
