Riesling Spätlese Nackenheimer Rothenberg

ETA June. 80g/l RS, 8.5g acid, 7% alc. When I tasted this last spring it was encased in baby fat, a super-ripe blockbuster Spätlese, sexy and luxuriant but very primary--hard to taste the nuances. With time this gorgeous bottling is settling into a more vintage-typical balance--still luscious for sure with deep sweetness and incredible density, BUT it's now more succulent and offers interesting flavors of clover honey, glazed orange peel, and a fascinating red fruit note akin to cherry or pomegranate. Would be an indulgent choice for duck a l'orange or aux cerises. Fine with a glazed holiday ham as well. An argument can be made that this is Auslese disguised as Spätlese. That's a compliment.

"Full-bodied and concentrated, with currant, yellow apple and stone notes that are pure and accented by hints of baker's spice. Shows good balance and vibrancy, which impart focus and depth. Drink now through 2034. 200 cases made."

"From predominantly healthy grapes with just a few raisins to raise the body, the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese is super clear and aromatic on the nose, with perfectly ripe (grape) fruit and slatey aromas. On the palate this is a lush, pure, fresh, finessed, very elegant and highly delicate Spätlese with generous and sensual fruit, piquant acidity and lingering minerals. This is another gorgeous Rothenberg that will age for more than two decades. Fermented in stainless steel."
