Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er cru Les Lavières

2017
France
Burgundy

Mid-slope and predominantly limestone (Lavières comes from the word "lave" which here has nothing volcanic about it but was the term used in the past to describe the flat limestone slabs used to cover the roofs). In fact, these famous stones are found here in the sub-soil. The vines are more than fifty years old and are situated in the finest part of the appellation.

"The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières exhibits aromas of juicy cherries, rose petal, currant leaf, rich soil and warm spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent palate, with melting tannins, juicy fruit and a sapid finish. The domaine's old vines in this superbly situated premier cru have put in a very strong showing this year, and like the Savigny AOC, this was already in bottle when I tasted it."

"The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru, already in bottle, has a vibrant, spicy, rose petal and violet bouquet that is even more intense than the Aux Fournaux. The chalk/limestone terroir really shows through here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It does not quite have the charm and crystalline quality of the Aux Fournaux, but is more masculine and structured, with a lovely marine element tincturing the dark berry fruit toward the chalky finish. Excellent."
