Syrah Columbia Valley

United States

This wine blends 4 vineyards: the northerly Oldfield, Olsen, and two Walla Walla sources: Old Stones in the Rocks and the iconic Les Collines. Oldfield—adjacent to Boushey—and Olsen provide red fruit and freshness, while the Rocks gives pepper, funk, smoke, depth, and structure. Les Collines provides a world class base for the wine.  Aged 18 months in neutral barrel; about 50% whole-cluster.

"Olive tapenade, licorice, smoked herbs and plenty of peppery black fruits emerge from the 2014 Columbia Valley Syrah, and it's medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated and beautifully textured. It's another smoking wine from this estate that has real character and depth."

"Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Slightly musky aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, menthol and black pepper, with a whiff of game. Dense and juicy, with harmonious acidity giving shape and lift to its dark berry, pepper and violet flavors. Not a particularly fleshy or sweet wine but offers lovely inner-mouth perfume and saline minerality. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and subtle length. Suave Syrah, not at all overdone--and much more polite than the 2013 version at the same stage. I like this."
