Valbuena is nothing short of a baby Unico: it is always aged 5 years before release and has the complex, powerful and elegant components to cellar well for at least another fifteen to twenty. 95% Tempranillo and 5% Merlot, produced from many of the same plots used for Unico. Fermented by plot, then aged in a combination of barriques and larger 20,000L oak vats. Aged a further 5 years in bottle before release. This has the complexity, power and elegance to cellar well for at least another 15-20 years.
Ribera del Duero experienced its hottest and driest year for decades in 2015. This was both a challenge and an opportunity: on one hand, young vines in freer-draining soils suffered. But older, deep-rooted vines could tap into the water reserves furnished by a rainy winter, and yielded a reduced crop of intensely-flavored small berries.THe fruit from Ribera was selected from 160 high-altitude hectares of prime vineyards.
