Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Suchots

This vineyard is less than half a hectare in an exceptional spot, circled by Romanée-Saint-Vivant and the Richebourg to the south, and by the Echézeaux to the north. The average age of the vines on this vineyard is between 60 and 70 years old.

The wine is fermented 100% whole-cluster and aged in 30% new oak.

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Grands Suchots 1er Cru offers very perfumed, rose-petal-infused red currant and cranberry fruit that manages to convey the precocity of this vineyard while maintaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and finely tuned acidity. Very elegant in style, but I would like a little more rondeur and sumptuousness to develop on the finish. Therefore I will be prudent with my score for now."

"I couldn't resist drinking a bottle of Charles Lachaux's 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Grands Suchots, and while this is an immensely serious wine, built for the cellar, I certainly enjoyed catching it before it shuts down. Unfurling in the glass with a deep and kaleidoscopically complex bouquet of wild berries, peonies, cinnamon, Indian spices and blood orange, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with striking concentration without weight, exquisitely powdery structuring tannins, and a long, perfumed finish. This is a magical wine in the making and readers shouldn't hesitate to jump at the opportunity to acquire a few bottles, the high market price notwithstanding."
