The vineyards of the DO of Mentrida are situated on the northern end of the Toledo province where it boarders Madrid and Avila and extend to the foot of the Gredos Mountain range. Here the soils are mostly decomposed granite, or sand. The climate is continental - hot summers, cool winters but with the benefit of the high altitude plateau (they range from 1,300-2,000 ft above sea level), the cool night time air settles in and keeps the grape acids high. There vineyards here are difficult to farm - rocky, small parcels, steep hillsides with exposed rock, and old vines. It's truly a region for vignerons who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. The result is a wine with tons of character, power and elegance.
