Both graduates of the University of Pennsylvania, Andrew Lohfeld and Patrick Hernandez moved separately to New York City; one day in 2013, the two met up at a local bar to “catch up.” Andrew, a Philadelphia native and alum of the Kings County Distillery (The American Distilling Institute’s 2016 Craft Distillery of the Year), had long been mulling over the idea of opening his own distillery and had made up his mind to follow through on it; over drinks, he shared his vision with Patrick: a craft distillery focused on crafting a truly unique rum that paid tribute to its pre-industrial heritage. He also had a potentially ideal place in mind: New Orleans. The culture and history, as well as the abundance of sugar cane nearby, seemed to him the perfect fit. There was just one problem: Andrew had never been to New Orleans.
After hearing Andrew’s vision, Patrick, a Louisiana native, was instantly sold on the idea. Patrick was certain that Andrew would love New Orleans as much as he did, and within weeks, Patrick and Andrew set off on a “market research” trip. Thus, their partnership— and Roulaison— was born.
They intentionally keep their production small to allow them the freedom to push their creative limits and innovate, as well as to focus on making incredibly distinctive pot-distilled rums (a more historic approach to distilling than is commonplace today). Their ultimate goal is to add a bit more stylistic variety to the small-production rum market and to explore the dark recesses of rum history in order to create some unique and deliciously obscure libations. Roulaison’s products are full of robust, funky complexity; crafted using locally sourced ingredients; and unsuyllied by chill-filtration, charcoal-filtration, caramel coloring or any added flavoring.
