Grüner Veltliner Loiserberg Erste Lage

Austria
Kamptal
2021

Loiserberg, a terraced Erste Lage (Premiere Cru classified) vineyard with a southeast exposure, is their highest and coolest vineyard site, at 400m above sea-level. The vines here are over 30 years old, and the soils are composed of glimmer slate, with a little loess on top. The cold winds from the northwest chill down this hill as soon the sun goes down, so the fine fruit aromas in the berries are preserved. The combination of microclimate and soil creates a wine with a crystalline structure and pure fruit. The grapes are harvested according to taste, not by analysis; it is only a short time between not-yet-ripe and overripe maturity. If the grapes are too ripe, the minerality is lost.

100% spontaneous fermentation in 2000L barrels (local oak, old barrels); 6 months on full lees before bottling. All single vineyard wines are 100% botrytis free.

"Full nose of pomelo with hints of basil and fresh butter. The rock-solid base of candied-citrus character is married to wet-stone freshness on the generous palate. Healthy tannins firm up the long finish very nicely. From organically grown grapes."

"The 2021 Ried Loiserberg 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner shows prominent lactic notes, and in the background, orange aromas appear. The palate seems quite quaffable at first, but then it turns out to be powerful and distinctive, even a bit phenolic, but without being bitter. Overall, it's a juicy, quite complex and persistent Veltliner from the loess-covered crystalline rocks of the rather cool Loiserberg."
