Morgon Javernières

France
Beaujolais
2023

100% Gamay. From 3 hectares of vines in the historic Morgon lieu-dit of Javernières at the foot of the famous hill of the Côte du Py. The soils are much heavier with deep, iron-rich, red clay here versus the more schistous "rotten rock" up the Py hill. The vines are certified-organic, are 40 years old and have a full eastern exposure. They are harvested by hand. Generally around half of the bunches are left whole with half destemmed and put together into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is 13-14 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in cement tank for 9 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.

"The 2023 Morgon “Javernières” from Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes is just a touch riper than the la Voûte Saint-Vincent bottling this year, tipping the scales at fourteen percent. The wine is more black fruity in aromatic profile, wafting from the glass in a lovely blend of black cherries, dark berries, sweet stem tones, gamebird, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, peonies and a dollop of fresh thyme in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, structured and deep and sappy at the core, with fine balance and grip, lovely nascent complexity and a long, ripely tannic and tangy finish. This will need more cellaring time than the above before it starts to drink with generosity, but it is going to be excellent with a bit of patience. 2032-2065. "
