Sagrantino Montefalco DOCG "Fracanton"

100% Sagrantino. From biodynamically farmed, certified-organic, hand-harvested estate fruit. Named for Angelo Fongoli's grandfather, "Fracanton" comes from the oldest vines at Fongoli, planted in 1975 and trained in palmetta. The grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously in open-topped clay amphorae without sulfur or temperature control. Maceration is an extended period of 4-5 months with gentle hand punchdowns. The wine is aged in old Slavonian oak botti for around 5 years. It is bottled without fining, filtering or sulfur and aged another year before release.

"The 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino Fracanton takes the vibrant character and depth of Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino and dials everything up a notch. Like a florist shop on the nose, this is literally bursting with rose and violet perfumes complicated by crushed rocks and tart cherries. Rich with soft contours yet full of life, it’s the tantalizing acidity that really shines here, as it enlivens the ripe red fruits and sweet herbal tones within. Hints of licorice stain the senses throughout the finale, as the 2015 finishes potent yet incredibly fresh. The tannin management here is unbelievable. The fruit for the Fracanton goes through spontaneous fermentation in open-topped clay amphorae without sulfur or temperature control, after which it's matured in large oak botti for another five years."
