Vino de Pueblo, Clos Pepin Blanco (Albares, Bierzo Alto)

Spain
Bierzo
2023

Clos Pepin Blanco is the newest wine in the Aurora line-up. 100% Godello made from the mountainous vineyards of Albares, in Bierzo Alto, all worked by hand by German. It is made in stainless and then goes to French Oak and Amphorae where sometimes a fine layer of "flor" develops giving an incredible mouthfeel to the wine.

"This is the first white wine I have tasted from Germán Blanco’s excellent Casa Aurora. The wine is made entirely from Godello planted in the Bierzo Alto, with the wine fermented in stainless steel and then raised in a combination of older oak barrels and amphorae. If the wine forms a bit of flor during its élevage, this is not a worry for Señor Blanco. The 2023 version comes in at thirteen percent octane and delivers a deep and complex nose of nectarine, tangerine, nutty tones from the flor, a lovely base of soil, a touch of clay influence from the amphorae and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and nutty, with a fine core of fruit, good acids and grip, lovely balance and a long, focused and classy finish. This very well-made wine has depth and complexity, but it is pretty well defined by its flor, so one’s attachment to the wine will be reflective of how much they like this Sherry-like element in their Godello. 2026-2035."
