"Jean-Paul Brun’s 2022 Beaujolais “Cuvée l’Ancien” is an excellent young wine, tipping the scales at a classic thirteen percent octane in this drought vintage. The wine’s bouquet is bright and nascently complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, cranberries, vinesmoke, gamebird, a lovely base of soil tones, whole clusters and a topnote of peonies. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, tangy and has a rock solid core of fruit (particularly for straight Beaujolais!), with fine focus and balance, ripe tannins and a long, youthfully complex and very promising finish. In the style of the best wines of the 2022 vintage in Beaujolais, this wine will need some cellaring time to soften up its tannins, but it is going to be superb. 2033-2060+. "
